My friend Don was at the EAA Fly-in and a man came up to him and started
talking about his uncle that was in WWII. As the conversation went on, Mike
indicated he had a bunch of militaria that his uncle had left him and he
wanted it to be used for living history. He then went on to say he had an
old army truck back behind the barn and wanted to know if anyone would be
interested. Don's ears already at their peak sounded off and said he knew
just the guy. After several weeks of scheduling conflicts, Don and I headed
off to the farm. When we arrived and went around back of the barn, here
it sat. At first glance I could not believe it. A long wheel base truck,
had to be one of three types. The original rear box had been removed and
a 1.5 ton Chevy box was added along with a hydraulic dump system. The cargo
box was shortened a bit to fit the shorter chassis. We paid the man, loaded
up and home we went. Once home, I started scratching at the data plate.
Now, I already own one of the two known to exist WC 61's, so it blew me
away to realize that now I had another. They only made 58 of these trucks
to begin with, and here I now own two. Unfortunately, after an extensive
search of the farm, and racking of brains, no original box was found. Mike
said he remembers it, but that was when he was a kid. I removed the hardcab,
seats, dirt, debris, air cleaner. Hooked up a battery, shot some gas down
the throat and off it ran. Mike said it had not run in 10 plus years. The
chassis has too many weldments and the rust on the cab has rendered it to
be an organ donor. Engine is going in a WC 52, other parts on a WC 51 that
will be for sale soon. Cargo box is for sale. More pictures and such on
the for sale pages.
